AWS Commits to Water Replenishment to Address Global Water Crisis

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced its commitment to water replenishment, aiming to return over 7 billion liters of water to local communities each year. This initiative is part of AWS’s broader efforts to address the growing water crisis and ensure access to clean water for future generations.

The world is facing a water scarcity crisis, with global freshwater demand expected to exceed supply by 40% by 2030. While Amazon cannot solve this challenge alone, the company is dedicated to being a good water steward and contributing to positive change.

AWS’s water replenishment projects focus on restoring watersheds and providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services to communities in need. These initiatives align with AWS’s goal of being water positive by 2030.

“Amazon is committed to being a good water steward everywhere it operates,” said Kara Hurst, Amazon’s chief sustainability officer. “Doing our part to help address water scarcity is essential to overcoming health and economic risks for Amazon’s employees, customers, communities, and business. One of the ways AWS is innovating to help make a difference is by expanding on its water replenishment program to more places, which will return over 7 billion liters of water each year once all of the projects are completed. We also know we can’t solve the water scarcity challenge alone, and are sharing our learnings with others to make an even bigger impact.”

In 2023, AWS’s water replenishment portfolio returned 3.5 billion liters of water to local communities through 15 projects. With the announcement of six new projects, the total number of projects will reach 21, collectively returning over 7 billion liters of water annually.

AWS’s commitment to water replenishment demonstrates its leadership in addressing environmental challenges and its dedication to making a positive impact on the world. By investing in water restoration and providing access to clean water, AWS is contributing to a more sustainable future for communities around the globe.
