Maxter Constructora to Build Modern Waste Recovery Plant in Samaná as part of wider management project

Maxter Constructora SRL has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art solid waste recovery plant in the community of Sánchez, Samaná province. The project, known as Sustainable Northeast, aims to transform waste management in the region and address longstanding environmental challenges.

The plant will have the capacity to process 450 tons of waste per day, converting it into valuable resources through recycling, treatment, and the production of Waste Derived Fuel (CDR). The CDR will then be used to generate electricity for the national grid through a thermochemical reactor.

Sustainable Northeast will be held in two key stages:

First Stage: Construction and operation of the waste recovery plant, which will include recycling, treatment, recovery and storage of Waste Derivative Fuel (CDR). This phase will focus on the comprehensive waste management process.

Second Phase: Construction and operation of a thermochemical reactor (GAS) that will be used by the CDR to produce electricity for the national electricity grid.

The project has received environmental approval from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources following a rigorous one-year environmental impact assessment. The plant will operate under strict environmental standards, ensuring sustainable and efficient waste management.

Former Major League Baseball star and environmental advocate, Mariano Rivera, is a key investor in the project. Inspired by the region’s waste management challenges, Rivera has partnered with local entrepreneurs to develop a solution that combines environmental responsibility with economic opportunity.

He said: “We are deeply committed to the province of Samaná, where we present the project of a waste recovery plant that will allow the production of clean electricity and offer the population a cheaper source of energy. We want to help this tourist spot achieve a sustainability in waste management and eradicate landfills.

“The company will carry out comprehensive waste management, improving public-private administration and freezing the price of waste management for the next 20 years,” Rivera added. “We work in the environment of the circular economy, generating new raw materials from waste and fighting climate change, transforming environmental liabilities into an environmental asset.

“This project not only represents significant progress in waste management, but also sets a precedent for sustainable development and environmental protection in the region.”

The Sustainable Northeast project is expected to create new jobs, boost the local economy, and improve the overall quality of life for residents of Samaná and María Trinidad Sánchez.
